Am I suffering from BPH?

Welcome to PCI Urology by Physicians' Clinic of Iowa

What is BPH?

BPH is a common condition that men suffer from due to the natural enlargement of the prostate. The prostate continuously grows as we age and as it grows it can begin to squeeze the urethra. This causes the urethra and bladder to work harder when urinating. Over time, this causes the bladder to become thickened and weakened, thus losing the ability to empty effectively. The squeezing of the urethra and weakening of the bladder is what cause the symptoms of BPH.

  • Frequent need to urinate both day and night
  • A sense that you cannot completely empty your bladder
  • Urgent feeling of needing to urinate
  • Weak or slow urine stream
  • The difficulty or delay in starting urination
  • A urinary stream that stops and starts

The symptoms of BPH can cause major issues in your life because they can lead to productivity loss, depression, and an overall decreased quality of life. However, you shouldn’t feel alone because over 50% of men suffer from symptoms of BPH by the age of 50.

If these symptoms sound like you, then the UroLift System may be able to help.

What is UroLift and How Can it Help?

The UroLift System is a procedure used to treat the enlarged prostate. During the procedure, implants are used to hold the prostate out of the way of the urethra relieving the symptoms of BPH. It is minimally invasive and doesn’t require any heating, cutting, removal, or destruction of prostate tissue. It can be performed under general anesthesia and is performed as an outpatient   procedure meaning it saves you both time and money.

How Does It Work?

Step 1

The UroLift Delivery Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate.

Step 2

UroLift Implants are delivered onto the prostate through a small needle. The permanent implants are placed to lift and hold the enlarged prostate out of the way to increase the urethra’s opening.

Step 3

The device is removed, and the urethra has been opened back up.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Patients typically go home on the same day with minimal downtime from the procedure. You should see symptom relief within two weeks, and you can get back to your normal activities quickly.

You may experience some blood in the urine and pain for a day or two after surgery. You shouldn’t; however, experience any issues with new developing erectile dysfunction since the procedure doesn’t remove or cut the prostate.

Are There Advantages to Using the UroLift System?

There are several advantages when using the UroLift System for BPH treatment over traditional BPH treatment:

  • It’s proven to be safe and effective
  • It provides rapid symptom relief
  • Doesn’t typically cause new or lasting sexual dysfunction
  • It’s covered by Medicare, national, and commercial insurance plans, when criteria are met
  • There is not usually a need for a catheter after treatment
